Located to the east of the Mendip Hills, Frome is centred on the River Frome from which the town takes its name. The name of 'Frome' has its origins in the Brythonic word 'ffraw' meaning fair, fine or brisk, this was being used to describe the flow of the river. There's an outstanding collection of 17th and 18th century homes in the older parts of Frome, including over 300 houses which show the earliest example of a planned grid pattern - these homes were built between 1660 and 1756.
